The instructions here
are for the traditional row method of growing
vegetables. The relatively wide spaces between
the rows allow passage so that weeding, watering,
spraying, etc. can be carried out. A new alternative
is the bed system, and its popularity continues
to grow. A plot 5ft wide and as long as you have
room for is double dug and a heavy dressing of
compost or manure incorporated. Each vegetable
is sown in a block on the bed so that all the
plants are the same distance from each other –
the spacings are quite close so that the leaves
of adjacent plants touch when the plants are mature.
All cultivation is done from the paths between
the beds. Weeds are suppressed and yields per
sq yard/metre are appreciably higher than those
obtained by the row system.
