Except for the hybrid
berries, blackberries may be raised from seed
sown in spring in shallow drills outdoors or in
a frame. Keep well watered and by late summer
they will be ready to move to the rows, where
they should be planted 15cm (6in) apart. The following
autumn, move to their fruiting quarters and grow
on as described.
Named varieties are propagated by rooting the
tips of the branches or canes they are bent down
from the wires in July and the ends inserted into
the soil to a depth of about 7cm (3in). Tread
firmly and keep moist. By November they will have
rooted and may then be severed from the parent
plant with about 15cm (6in) of cane attached.
They should then be moved to their fruiting quarters
and the parent cane tied in again. Nothing could
be easier.
