Obtain pot-grown plants
and either plant the vine in the pot, burying
it below soil level, or remove from the pot with
the soil ball intact, and plant over a layer of
stones. These should be rammed well down to make
a solid base after the soil has been removed to
a depth of 45cm (18in). If you are planting the
figs against a wall, which is the best place for
them, place pieces of slate on the other three
sides of a hole made 45cm (18in) wide, to restrict
the roots still further. Then when planting the
soil ball, make the soil around it as compact
as possible and water in.
Figs are planted in spring and require copious
amounts of water through summer. They should also
be given a thick mulch in May each year. They
grow well in the horizontal form planted against
a west wall, leaving a south-facing wall for peaches
or pears.
