BELLFLOWER

Family CAMPANULACEAE
Campanula species
Perennial

the common bellflower

A large genus of perennials, annuals and biennials, widely spread over nearly all the northern hemisphere. The greater number are suitable for rock gardens, being of dwarf habit.
Those of sufficient vigour and possessing a habit suiting them to herbaceous borders comprise Campanula persicifolia, rising to three feet and bearing large bell-shaped flowers of lavender or white in double or single form.
Campanula lactiflora with branching stems up to four feet, bearing panicles of blue or white flowers.
Campanula latifolia, up to five feet with racemes of larger, violet-purple flowers, its form burghaltii being pale blue.
Campanula glomerata and its vars, dahurica and pusilla, with clustered heads of deep purple flowers on one-and-a-half-feet stems.
Campanula pyramidalis, the Chimney Campanula, has stately spikes up to six feet densely clothed with open bells of blue or white.
Campanula grandis, up to one and a half feet, with wide-open flowers of deep blue.

Easily cultivated in a well-drained soil.

Propagate by division of the roots in early spring or from seed.

The flowering season is in June and July.
