ROCKFOIL
Family SAXIFRAGACEAE
Bergenia cordifolia
Perennial
Known also as Megasea cordifolia and one of a
large genus comprising mostly plants for the rock
garden.
The plant is from Siberia and has large dark,
glossy green foliage, heart-shaped and produced
in profusion. The flowers are three-quarters of
an inch or more across, of a variable shade of
rose pink and borne on thick, fleshy stems from
one to one and a half feet high, and barely rising
above the foliage. There are a number of varieties
of garden origin.
Will grow in any position but, being early flowering,
one that faces due south or is protected somewhat
from wintry weather is preferable.
Propagate by division of the root or from seed.
The flowering season for Bergenia cordifolia is
in early spring.
