Coreopsis species
Annual
A genus of hardy annuals native to North America
and sometimes listed as Calliopsis and Leptosyne,
the former often being used to differentiate the
annuals from the perennials.
The leaves are mostly lobed or cut and the flowers
borne singly or in panicles. The most noteworthy
of the annual species are the following:
Coreopsis atkinsoniana, two to four feet, with flowers
one and a half inches across, orange with purple
shading at the base;
Coreopsis bigelovii, reaching a foot high with flowers
of golden yellow;
Coreopsis calliopsidea, reaching two feet, with golden-yellow
flowers, three inches across;
Coreopsis coronata (syn. Coreopsis nuecensis), two feet, having
orange-yellow flowers, with a bronze-crimson zone,
two inches across;
Coreopsis drummondii, two feet, with yellow flowers,
two inches across, with a bronze-purple ring around
a purple disc; and Coreopsis tinctoria (syn. Coreopsis bicolor,
Coreopsis elegans. Coreopsis marmorata), three feet, has golden-yellow
flowers with a crimson ring encircling a bronze-purple
disc.
Propagation is from seed.
The flowering season is from midsummer until frost.
