Phlomis
– Jerusalem Sage
Hardy Perennial.
Three to four feet.
Flowers yellow, July.
A perennial not often seen; a bold, strong grower,
not particular as to soil. There are two varieties:
Phlomis fruticosa forms a woody bush, with greyish
leaves and clear yellow flowers in whorls Phlomis
viscosa has darker foliage and smaller flowers;
this is not shrubby, but throws up its new stems
yearly from a ground-tuft of leaves. Both sorts
are very hardy and accommodating, and deserve
a place in the less prominent corners of the herbaceous
border.
