Trillium
– Wood Lily
Six inches.
Flowers of several colours, April and May.
The best variety of Trillium is grandiflorum,
which has pure white flowers of three petals arranged
triangularly, rising on a short stem bearing three
broad leaves. Trillium recurvum has purple, Trillium stylosum
rose flowers. The Trilliums are really bog plants;
and it is of little use trying to grow them in
an ordinary border; they will flower weakly for
a few years, and finally disappear. Their proper
soil is moist and peaty; the best imitation of
this that most gardeners can contrive is a damp
and shady corner; with a little care and management
tolerable results may be secured. Plant in autumn
and leave undisturbed as long as the plants show
flower.
