WINDFLOWER
Family RANUNCULACEAE
Anemone species
Perennial
A large genus chiefly found in north temperate
and mountainous regions. Apart from many dwarf
species that are eminently suitable for rock gardens,
there are others that have particular value in
herbaceous borders.
Anemone fulgens, a hybrid of Anemone pavonia and Anemone hortensis,
is noteworthy as having given rise to the famous
St. Brigid strain with a colour range that varies
from white to shades of pink, crimson, purple
and almost blue. The flowers reach a height of
a foot when well grown in a rich soil.
Anemone x hybrida, often known as Anemone japonica, is of
herbaceous habit with elegantly cut foliage and
branching stems, bearing large flowers, three
inches across, of white, pink or purple in late
summer.
A rich sandy loam, into which leafmould has been
introduced, is necessary for the best results.
Propagation is by seed for the St. Brigid Anemones,
by division for Anemone x fulgens, and by division
or root cuttings for Anemone x hybrid Anemone
The flowering season extends throughout the greater
part of the year for the St. Brigid varieties,
and in late summer for Anemone x hybrid Anemone
